Photoshop: Skater

Finished.jpg

Another piece of work created in Photoshop (CS3 for those that are interested in versions) using various layer styles and brushes to create a grungy looking art piece.

The look of this image was inspired by the Apple iPod commercial which featured Eminem. Of course, the final look is quite drastically different, but the inspiration was there (at least for me).

Anyways, in typical fashion, here’s a rundown of the process I went through from the original image down to the finished one.

Isolating the Skater and Skateboard using the pen tool.

2a.jpg

Desaturating the original image

3.jpg

Applying a threshold effect

3c.jpg

Creating a color pattern on a new blank layer above the threshold layer.

3b.jpg

Setting the color pattern to screen onto the threshold image.

4.jpg

Grabbing the original threshold image and duplicating it, then inverting it’s colors.

4a.jpg

Inverting the colors on the color pattern and screening it on top of the second threshold image.

5.jpg

Deleting the white space off the second threshold image so it would reveal all the color in both images. (Call this funky color)

6a.jpg

Taking the original image and creating outlines.

6b.jpg

Setting the outlines to color burn over the funky color image

7.jpg

Grabbing my isolated skater, enlarging him, and applying a threshold adjustments

8.jpg

Applying a screen layer to give him some color.

9.jpg

Applying a black grunge brush behind the skater to allow him to pop out a bit from the background

10.jpg

Some ink splatters to the side of the image to kill off some of the background detail

11.jpg

More paint splatters for emphasis ont he skater

12.jpg

Some grunge brush effects to the side of the image just for fun.

13.jpg

And a little more.

14.jpg

I created a black and white image of the original again to help increase contrast.

And the finished product.

The End.
